The Environmental Benefits of Inflatable Buildings

In this age of increasing concern for the health of the planet it is more important than ever to look at ways of minimising the long term impact of buildings upon the environment and to investigate new methods of sustainable construction.

A new kind of building technology is emerging as an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional building methods. This technology produces structures which are highly efficient in terms of the amount of material used in their construction, require no permanent foundations, can be relocated easily, and can recycled.

The buildings in question are in fact a new generation of inflatable buildings. These are no ordinary inflatables however. They are designed using the latest CAD technology and structural analysis software and are constructed from modern, fire retardant, composite textiles which are cut and joined using techniques developed form aerospace manufacturing. This enables the buildings to operate at higher pressures than conventional inflatable structures producing much stiffer, stronger structures.

It’s important at this point to make a distinction between air-supported buildings and inflatable buildings. A traditional air-supported building is one which is comprised of a single layer membrane attached to the ground around its perimeter. Air is blown under the membrane to lift it off the ground and form the shape of the building.

An inflatable building on the other hand, uses two layers of membrane connected together typically using spars made from the same material. The cavity formed between the layers is pressurised with air producing a rigid structural element which allows large span structures to be achieved.

The structures, pioneered by Tectoniks Limited in the UK, are extremely weight efficient and are highly portable yet they have the strength of metal-framed portable buildings and can be made into virtually any shape.

So what makes them so environmentally friendly? Well, firstly, the majority of a finished inflatable building is made from fresh air. Analysis of a finished structure shows that the amount of textile used represents only 0.5% of the volume of the structure. For example, one square metre of a 500mm thick inflatable wall has a volume of 0.5 cubic metres but the quantity of fabric used in its construction is only 0.0025 cubic metres. An inflatable building must surely be the most efficient of all building types in terms of the amount of raw materials used compared to the volume of the finished structure.

Since the textiles are supplied in roll form, the materials required for an entire building can be transported in a single medium-sized van thereby minimising the effect of transporting raw materials upon the environment.

Thanks to initiatives such as the TexyloopTM service pioneered by Ferrari Textiles, the scrap material produced during the manufacture of inflatable buildings can be collected, recycled and made into new composite textiles.

The inflatable buildings produced by Tectoniks Ltd. have a long life expectancy but when they do eventually reach the end of their service they can also be recycled using services such as Texyloop.

Another environmental benefit of inflatable buildings is that they do not require permanent foundations. Conventional buildings usually require concrete foundations which are permanent and cannot be moved. An inflatable building would typically be anchored using spiral anchors which are literally screwed into the ground. If a building needs to be relocated, the anchors are unscrewed and used again. The flooring used in the buildings is modular and can be laid on top of the ground. It can also be re-used if the building is moved.

Once an inflatable building has been moved, there is no lasting impact upon the site where it used to be.

Another important consideration when assessing the environmental impact of a building is the energy used throughout its life. Because Tectoniks structures are of a welded construction (as opposed to stitched), they are virtually air tight. Conventional stitched inflatables require high power electric blowers which run constantly. Tectoniks structures require much smaller blowers which are connected to a control system which only activates them when the pressure in the structure falls below a certain level. The blowers then run for a few seconds to top up the pressure.

The low power requirement for these structures means that it is entirely possible to use solar power to provide the electricity required for their operation.

Inflatable buildings also have a natural level of insulation provided by the air contained within the walls. Tectoniks have also pioneered methods for adding additional insulation within the inflatable walls. The insulation material is flexible and is packed up with the building when deflated.

Cooking Once A Month – Your Kitchen Is Hibernating!

In today’s fast pace of life, when people are too busy, cooking the meals once a month might appeal to some. The premise behind cooking once a month is to cook an entire month’s dinners/meals in advance only on one weekend and freeze the meals for the use throughout the month.

There are three different ways to deal with once a month cooking. One can select one’s favorite recipes and cook them in double batches. Second alternative is one can prepare about twenty different recipes and the third one, prepare basic starter meals and improvise on them in the course of the month.

One needs to properly plan the menu in order to tackle once a month cooking. With internet access it has become easier. There are many websites catering to planning and providing shopping lists for those who are too busy or lack the organizing skills to design such a thing. For those who are systematic ensure that all plans are jotted down before hand, the recipes, the quantity of food to be prepared, the grocery list etc. One needs to be certain that all the required supplies as also freezer bags, storage containers etc are there. It is also recommended that a piece of paper or a notebook on the freezer will help to keep trace of what meals are in the freezer.

Some plans propose dividing the task of cooking over the weekend in three days. Finish shopping on Friday. Start cooking on Saturday and finish it on Sunday. To make it still simpler one can opt to share the work with a companion.

Tips and suggestions for cooking once a month:

• One needs at least one clay pot to cook tough cuts of meat for stew or barbeques. It is suggested that one should have as many as one can.
• Pre-cut vegetables the earlier night. A food processor will make one’s task easier if you have one.
• Pre cook the chicken with vegetables tied in a cheese cloth bag. Cook the chicken for long hours till the meat separates from the bone. The unused meat can be frozen. The broth can be used as base for soups. If it is not used right away, refrigerate it so as to skim the fat off, and then freeze in ice cube trays.
• Plan the cooking sessions properly. With what foods the day will start, and how the day will end.
• If one has small children, try and engage someone to baby sit the children during the day.
• Wash the dishes on time. This controls the mess, and a pile of dishes by end of the day can be avoided.

Once a month cooking can assist those who are busy, who need to save money, or just relax the mind knowing there is food for dinner.

I am passionate at focusing on skill set to get to where you want to get to in your career. Let’s look at fashion careers for older women.

Who said fashion is about youth? Certainly from reading glamour magazines and seeing how the general media portrays body image in fashion you would think so. But there are so many jobs that create a fashion business and I am going to let you know the one’s that are prefect careers for older women.

Presentation is everything and in fashion it’s the entire industries core value. There are a multitude of brands craving for the presentation and style of older women. In fashion retail and wholesale sales particularly I have had numerous requests for the presentation, reliability and commitment of an older woman. Successful Australian brands including Maggie T, Resort Report, Wombat, Dolina, Brown Sugar and many more rely on the presentation of older women to relate to their clients in the retail and wholesale environment. Better still some offer exceptional flexibility to attract older women to their careers including flexible hours and job share structure. Many of my clients have commented on the need to employ older women to relate to the brand and target customer and although it is not policy for them to discriminate should a younger person apply they have found huge success in attracting and employing older women to their brands especially in the retail environment.

Let’s investigate the behind the scenes careers for older women. Over the years and during my days in Fashion Recruitment I have placed many older women into permanent and job share roles in Customer Service, Accounts and as Administrators. The attraction of employing a skilled older woman who may be interested in permanent part time or job share is highly attractive within a fashion head office environment. One of the pluses that employers are constantly quoting to me is that older women are reliable and tend to stay in the role for a long period of time thus providing consistency and sound relationships with customers. By providing flexibility many employers have realised that the benefit to the business is immeasurable. Older women feel that they are being valued by the employer and with this the loyalty that they give has a direct impact on sales and service levels.

The question begs… Is there room for older women in design, product development and brand management roles within a fashion environment? In this instance an older women making a career change into fashion may find obstacles in securing a role in these categories. Experience counts and making a move into a career in fashion in these categories relies on experience. In this instance my suggestion to you is to focus on your foundation skill set and transfer these skills into fashion. For example if you have been an administrator within another industry you could simply make the transition into fashion and create your career within a new environment. Attempting to move from an unrelated skill set into design, product development or brand management as an older woman may result in a lack of opportunities, however, if you have been in a design, product development or brand role within a fashion environment you have a future.

Reposition yourself within a brand applicable to your age and fashion purchasing habits. In design, product development or brand management your success is reliant on your understanding of the target market and what better understanding will you have if you are the customer? That’s not to say that older women are not successfully designing youth brands, they are and always will. But in my opinion your understanding of the target market and adaptation to youth product as you get older can be challenging. If you strategically reposition yourself into a new target market and make use of your skill set you are guaranteed success.

In fashion careers for older women are also common within Senior Management and Operations. Youth is not a factor when it comes to leadership and strategic business management and experience counts. If you have created your career within a fashion environment in operations and management you need to move with the times and adapt to the behaviours, drivers and thinking of the youth you employ. If you can successfully do this which means not adopt stale ideals of how thing were you have a great future. Your career drivers as an older woman may be completely different but your success and especially within a fashion environment is your ability to wholeheartedly embrace change and the youth of today.

One more thing; successful careers for older women within the fashion industry are incalculably reliant on your ability to move with the times without trying to be what you are no longer; young at heart will do just fine.
