Buying Retro Furniture
When first deciding on buying retro furniture, it is useful to know a few of the better manufacturers and designers from the period. This has been made slightly harder by the fact that an item of Furniture called “retro” can come from the 1950’s through to current production items.
Once you have decided on a particular theme i.e. chromed items with glass (that can be either clear or tinted), sticking to that style lends itself to modern house or flat design. Options of various wood veneers were available as an alternative to glass offering a warmer feel and variety. The most commonly used veneer from the 50’s, 60’s or 70’s was rosewood and this was used by two of the best British manufacturers of the era. They were Merrow Associates and Pieff. Both companies produced items of the highest quality and style. Recognizing these pieces is not always easy due to the fact that Merrow rarely labeled their furniture whereas, fortunately, Pieff did.
Condition is an important factor when buying an item as chips to glass, chrome work that is pitted or flaking or veneers peeling or missing can be expensive to rectify.
Quality leathers were also used by Merrow and Pieff offering an even wider range to choose from. There were many other designers who are now widely collected and two of the leading designers were Robin Day and Ernest Race. They both produced a vast variety of items many of which have become design icons such as the Ernest Race “Heron” chair which had bolt-on legs with a fabric covered seat. Robin Day produced a huge range which included the use of molded plastic seating.
Retro design furniture from the Fifties onwards includes many designers from the USA as well as Europe and Scandinavia. From the USA designers had a huge influence on furniture production throughout the world, possibly the most influential being Eames whose items are very collectible.
George Nelson items are also well respected for style and quality of manufacture in particular the “Coconut” chair. Its radical, triangular shape helped make it become another design icon from the 1950’s.
Scandinavian designers produced many desirable items most of which were produced in teak and occasionally in rosewood. Most of these items were labeled making their origins easy to identify. The vast majority of these being of Danish origin.
Because quite often companies producing furniture manufactured a range for domestic and commercial/office use making it hard to determine their original design function i.e. there is a very fine line between a storage cabinet for office items, files etc and a sideboard for domestic usage. This cross over of use makes it easier to locate retro furniture as many items now turn up in second hand office furniture outlets. From a buyer’s point of view, the most commonly used source for locating items is now via specialist sellers, auction houses and eBay all of which have positive and negative aspects of buying your piece of retro furniture.
My advice would be research the item, obtain a condition report and negotiate a price that both the buyer and seller are happy with.
There are so many good designers of retro furniture it would be impossible to name them all but I couldn’t finish without mentioning one of my personal favorites – Robert Heritage. He also produced a wide range of furniture – one item in particular that has become a true design icon is the “Hamilton” sideboard which is a truly wonderful piece of design and functionality.

In the Bible: the Food of All Birds is Green Plant
This is a new series (1-30) of Verse No. in the Bible versus the Quran.
Verse No. 30 in the Old Testament says: And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so.
Verse No. 30 in the New Testament says: They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:
Verse No. 30 in the Noble Quran says: and if ye are in doubt concerning that which we reveal unto our servant (Muhammad), then produce a Surah of the like thereof, and call your witness beside Allah if ye are truthful.

In the article 29, Genesis 1:29 says: Then God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you;
Consequently, the Bible determines man’s food; it is every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it.
In the verse Genesis 1:29, Herbs and fruits must be man’s food, including corn, and all the products of the earth; it seems likely that the Bible is in favor of the vegetarians.
Furthermore, Genesis 1:30 determines also the food of all the animals and all the birds, the verse says:
And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so.
This indicates that the food of all the beasts of the earth, all the birds of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life are the green plants.
It is clear then that the green plants are the food of all the animals and all the birds.
Because birds have a high temperature and use lots of energy, they need to eat a lot of food, compared with their weight.
Birds eat different foods. Some birds eat green plants. Other birds eat fish, insects, small reptiles and mice. Birds of prey eat mammals and other birds. Some birds are scavengers and eat the bodies of creatures that have died.
But the Bible in Genesis 1:30 determines the food of the birds, that is “every green plant”.
As for the beasts, every kid knows what they eat.
But the Bible too decides that the food of ALL the beasts is “every green plant”.
However, and to be honest, in Ezekiel 39:17 God will have birds and beasts eat human flesh and drink human blood…

The meaning of verse 2:23:
And if you are in doubt, in uncertainty, concerning what Allah has revealed through the Archangel Gabriel unto His servant, Muhammad, whom you accuse of fabrication of the Quran, that it is from Allah, then bring a Surah like it, then produce a Surah like it in its eloquence, fine arrangement and its bestowal of knowledge of the Unseen.
And call your witnesses, seek help from those other gods that you worship, it is said that this refers to their leaders that they follow, besides Allah, that is, other than Him, so that it can be seen, if you are truthful, in your claim that Muhammad speaks it from himself, that Muhammad invents the Quran. So do this, for you are also fluent speakers of Arabic like him. When they could not do this, Allah said… (See next article).
A Surah of the Quran is a chapter (a passage) with a beginning and end made up of a minimum of three verses)
It is fruitful to know that Chapter 108, Surah AL-KAUTHER (ABUNDANCE) is composed only of 10 Arabic words.
It follows that Allah challenges mankind by producing 10 Arabic words like it (like the Quran) in its eloquence, fine understanding and its assignment of knowledge of the Unseen.
As far as I know, this is the First Linguistics Challenge in the History of Mankind. No author (s) in the history of mankind has the courage to generate a challenge like that. Thousands of scholars came from the Western countries to the East, they have studied thoroughly the Arabic language, some of them wrote books and encyclopedias in Arabic. However, none of them tried to produce 10 Arabic words to beat this unbeaten challenge. Also, they did not tell the people in the West about this unbeaten challenge. Have you ever heard about it?

Prince of the Environment Chills His Palace

Climate change has been a much talked about subject in royal circles since Prince Charles started to use his position to push it up the agenda.
But a new royal has entered the debate, and Monaco’s Prince Albert recently joined Prince Charles at his innovative Poundbury village in Dorset.
The significance that it was Charles’ 58th birthday wasn’t overlooked by a Monaco Travel guide, YourMonaco.com
‘Since Albert came to power he has made the environment his number one priority. And just as Prince Charles has become known for his views on everything from architecture to climate change, so has Prince Albert. Of course Albert’s position isn’t as important as Charles’ as future King of England, but where he can he tries to champion the environmental cause’.
In April 2006 Prince Albert made a trip to the North Pole to highlight the issue of global warming, and since then has taken part in other initiatives to try and push the environment up the political agenda of fellow world leaders, including involving Monaco more at the United Nations and for the first time calculating the tax haven’s GDP, which will allow Monaco to commit money towards developing countries.
‘As soon as he came to power he signed Monaco up to the Kyoto Treaty designed to cut the world’s greenhouse emissions’, add http://www.yourmonaco.com, ‘and he has established his own foundation to promote better understanding of the issues of the rise in sea levels and quality of water’.
With the threat of rising sea levels, it’s easy to see that Monaco could be affected as it sits on the shores of the Mediterranean. The world’s second smallest country, and the best known tax haven, Monaco has in the past increased her size by reclaiming land from the sea, resulting in area where the district of Fontvieille now stands, and one of the best known Monaco hotels, the Columbus, is situated.
But there is a danger that by championing the environmental cause that Prince Albert could turn off his people before he turns off the warming of the planet.
‘Monaco is Home to the world’s wealthy’, say the travel guide, ‘And it’s a place of fun. The Monaco Grand Prix, the casino and the fact that it’s the most sought after tax haven in Europe might not sit comfortably with heavy politics. Happily the environment is an issue that has moved from the fringe to mainstream, and is something that nearly everyone is concerned about. Luckily for Prince Albert he has identified himself with an issue that is just as important to the tax exiles and business people who bring their money to Monaco as it is to everyone else. In the past Prince Charles has been slightly ridiculed with his views on the environment and organic farming, but now with hindsight a lot of people think he was ahead of his time.’
Referring to Monaco’s tax haven status YourMonaco.com add ‘Prince Albert needs to be careful not to kill the goose that lays the golden egg. Monaco is to start asking Businesses in strict confidentiality for finance figures so Monaco can do more at the United Nations and on environmental issues. If he looks down from his palace and sees the wealth surrounding him he might be tempted to tap into it for environmental causes as he believes in it in such a genuine and sincere way. There have been press reports of some of his staff leaving, and if true it can only be hoped that it wasn’t over fiscal matters. From the European royal families on environment issues we would view Charles as the king, and hopefully Albert will be the prince!’.

Prince Albert’s father, Prince Rainier, was Europe’s longest reigning Monarch until his death in April 2005. Known affectionately as the ‘builder prince’ he transformed Monaco into the world’s favourite tax haven and ensured the Monaco Grand Prix became one of the best known annual sporting events. The Principality Albert succeeded to was a country known throughout the world for money and glamour, and the Monte Carlo casino only added to its legendary status.
Albert has continued in his father’s footsteps with a plan to develop an island off Monte Carlo, and like his father with the reclaimed land in Fontvieille the Monaco map will change again.
In keeping with his stance on the environment, it is thought that a successful bid to build the island will need to be seen to be environmentally friendly, with the possibility of lower rise buildings than some parts of Monaco have endured to create more living space.
Monte Carlo has long been associated with glamour, heightened throughout the world in 1956 when Prince Albert’s father married his mother, US actress Grace Kelly.
Speculation was rife earlier this year that Prince Albert would be announcing his own engagement to South African swimmer Charlene Wittstock.
‘Things have gone quiet recently on the Charlene front’, comment YourMonaco, ‘Monaco is all about glitz and glamour and perhaps a surprise announcement will be made soon. But it’s possible that Albert is more interested in environmental affairs than affairs of the heart’.
Monaco has been making the news recently as Monaco real estate prices have escalated, and are on a level with London and New York.

There’s one policeman for every one hundred residents and has to be the safest country to live in Europe’.
The 2007 Monaco Grand Prix, the possibility of a royal engagement and Prince Albert’s continuing campaign for the environment make the year ahead an exciting one for residents and visitors to Monaco alike.

Time Education!
Financial education is important for various reasons. For example, financial education helps me to identify risks so that I can avoid financial traps such as the use of future money from credit cards on luxury items. By using my future money, essentially I will be depriving myself of the chance to invest in assets that will generate passive income. Passive income is the key to creating wealth, as I have understood from the book Rich Dad Poor by Robert Kiyosaki. Also, I will need to pay large amount of compounding interest for my outstanding credit cards bills.
I have heard a lot about financial education but I rarely heard anything on time education. Yes, I have heard about time management but there is a difference between time management and time education. Time management is invented for busy people to manage their time. It is not meant for people who have a lot of spare time. For people who have a lot of spare time, time management does not make sense at all!
What do I mean by time education? Time education educates one on how to make full use of one’s time. It should include investment, risk management and time management just like financial education. The purpose of time education is so that one makes the best use of one’s time to realize one’s potential.
Time is a limited resource that is always draining away whether I make full use of it or not. In that sense, it is even more precious than money. Time and money is the only two available things that I can invest to create wealth based on what I had learned from the Rich Dad’s series by Robert Kiyosaki. Yet, there is no full syllabus on time Education. Sometime, I wish that there were such a thing as a compulsory time education where I am taught on all aspects about time.
What are the aspects about time that I will like to learn from time education?
Firstly, I like to learn that I can earn passive time similar to the way that I can earn passive income. Using an asset that can speed up or automate a manual process, I am able to gain passive time. For example, I can leave my washing machine running while I do other things. I can reduce my washing time using the washing machine as compared to manual washing of my clothes.
Secondly, I like to learn that there is a compounding interest for time too! For example, if I am interested to learn violin. I will invest my time to learn and practice violin consistently. After the first year, my skills maybe below average. After the second year, my skills will progress because of my consistent time investment to learn and practice. After a number of years of consistent time investment, there will reach a point where I will have a break through. My skills will reach a superb level. This is like having a compounding return based on the time invested.
It will be great if there is a time projection chart that can give me a guideline on how much time I need to invest to reach a particular goal. For examples, if I want to be a superb violinist, I will need to invest 10 years of time to learn and practice. If I want to be a millionaire, I will need to invest 15 years of time to learn and practice. If I want to be a top golfer, I will need to invest 12 years of time to learn and practice.
This is like doing a projected return for my financial investments. Before I do any investment, I will like to know the projected return of the investment. For example, if fund A gives me a greater amount of projected return compared to fund B, I will probably choose to invest in fund A if the risk involved is the same. Similarly, if there is a time projection chart, I will want to choose the investment with best return.
Thirdly, I will like to know about the dangers of time wastage. If I waste my time, what are the dangers that I need to face? For example, if I do not plan for my retirement early, then I will loss the advantage of earning compounding interest for my financial investment. The danger will be that I may not have enough money for retirement.
Another example is that if I do not exercise regularly, then I will loss the advantage of building a Healthy body. In the long terms, I face the danger of falling sick easily. This will cause me to loss time because I need time to recover. Also, I will loss money because I need to pay for my medical bills.
These are just some of the aspects of time education that I can think of at the moment. It is definitely more than just time management. Though I agree that financial education is important as gathered from Rich Dad’s series by Robert Kiyosaki, I also feel that time education is just as important.

What food to sell at a high school’s fundraising event?
We’re considering chocolate-covered frozen bananas, but aren’t sure if they’ll sell.
Many of the less-exotic foods have already been claimed by other clubs (soda, donuts, burritos, burgers, caramel apples, apple cider, garlic/foccacia bread, fried chicken, fish balls, smoothies, pizza, sushi, tapioca). We are also not allowed to sell Food cooked by ourselves.
What other food items are likely to sell well? By the way, I live in northern California, so the weather is always pretty mild. Thanks for any and all suggestions!
