What are some interesting or exotic pets allowed in Australia?

Okay, well I’m 16 years old. I have epilepsy and have startle seizures so a loud pet isn’t a good choice at all. I am willing to spend a fair bit of money on the animal itself. I live in Victoria, so ferrets and rabbits are legal, but I’m looking for something different see?

I wondered if anyone could list (maybe) as many pets that I could possibly keep (indoor or outdoor) andd some sources on how to care for it.

How about a veiled chameleon? Here is a care sheet with pictures:

Good luck

My Pets are Safe on Road! Thanks to Pet Safety Lights

No doubt! Pets are man’s best friend. But are we also our pet’s Friend let alone Best Friends. “Pet Dogs getting run over by Motorists” is not the news even media is willing to publish. Generally its not that motorists run over dogs or other animals willingly. It’s just that dogs or cats are hard to spot on the roads especially when vehicles are running at high speeds.

Obviously keeping pets in home always is not the solution. So how do we ensure our Pet’s Safety? The easiest and most logical way is to make your pet ‘Visible’ to the motorist or even to you if it wanders off.

What you need is a Safety Light for your pet. Pet Safety Light works on the same principle of making your dog ‘Easier to Spot’. Pet safety lights are bright flashing LED safety lights. These lights when attached to the leash, collar or harness of your pet, would make your pet safe.

Pet safety lights come in bright flashing colors of blue/ white, jade/yellow, orange/ blue, pink/ jade, red/white and red/white/blue. So now you can not only ensure your pet safety but can also choose the color you like or your ‘pet’ likes. You can also make personalized dog collars out of these lights.

Pet safety lights are water proof so it may be worn by pet even while taking a bath or even when he is out in rain. So no fear of damaging the lights even when you forget to take them off. These lights are made of to be sturdy and can absorb damage so as to be your pet’s companion where ever it wanders off.

Pet Safety Lights are visible from about ½ a mile of distance. This ensures better chances of your pet being spotted by the motorists at night. This also increases chances of your pet being spotted when lost.

Pet Safety Lights are effective and affordable. These pet safety lights provide an easy solution to keep your pets safe while not burning a hole in your pocket.

What do you feed your carniverous pets?

This is a legitimate question. I can assure you I’m not trying to be flippant or smart by asking it. For all vegans, do you feed your pets (mainly cats and dogs) traditional pet food made with meat? I’m mainly curious to receive answers from vegans who choose to be vegan because they think it’s cruel to kill animals. Part two (for those of you who feed your pets regular old dog/cat food): Why is it OK to kill animals for your pets to eat, but not for you to eat? Don’t you think that the chickens and lambs and ducks and whatever other animals they use to make pet food are treated just as badly as animals that people eat? Please don’t take offense…I’m just curious. Thanks for all replies!

I’m neither a vegan nor a pet owner….

However, I can’t imagine a vegan (for cruelty reasons) owning a pet. Consider that for millenia, these animals have been cross-bred and inbred to strip any and all wild tendency out of them. Then mass reproduced and sold.

Personally, I dosn’t bother me. But someone who is a vegan due to animal ethics issues would be a bit hypocritical if they owned a pet.

Before Buying Exotic Pets

Each year millions of family pets are lost, and end up at shelters that have no idea who these pets belong to, or how to contact the owners to return the pets. But, something as simple as a pet tag that you only have to register for once, because the contact information can be updated free for the life of the pet, can almost erase this problem and reunite many pets with their families.

Questions to Ask Before for Buying Exotic Pets

Having a pet has always been found by many to be a life enriching experience. It isn’t unusual for people to have a dog or a cat as companions at home. However, there are people who aren’t content with the typical animal friends, others want the excitement and thrill that can be provided by exotic pets. Acquiring and maintaining exotic pets are not really that difficult nowadays, but if you are considering to get an exotic pet, you must first ask yourself the following questions:

Why do you want an exotic pet?

Many people consider having exotic pets because it seems to be cool to have one. However, having exotic pets is a serious decision that one must carefully examine. Many exotic pets need more care than typical pets. You should weigh all factors according to your abilities and capacities before getting any particular exotic pet.

Is it legal to keep the exotic pet?

Some animals are prohibited by law to be kept as pets. You should make sure that your area allows people to own the particular species you are eyeing before getting it. Otherwise you might have to give up your pet or be penalized for owning it. What are exotic pets like?

Do you have the capacity and ability to own the exotic pet?

Keep in mind that some pets, like a dog for example, are much more expensive to own than others. It is important that you know what you and your family can do to keep your pet healthy, happy and safe before you make any purchases.

As mentioned, most exotic pets need extra care and attention. You must be sure that you have the time, effort and money to spend caring for the exotic pet. Can you feed it? Can you provide appropriate shelter? Can you afford the health care expenses? Owning pets, especially exotic ones, takes great responsibility, and you must be certain that you have this quality before owning one.

Can the pet live in your area?

Certain pets may be legal in your area, but they may not necessarily be able to live in your home. Some pets might be too noisy or too rowdy to live in apartments and condominiums. Pets usually require a certain amount of space, air, and sunlight to live well and you have to be sure that your home can provide that.

Is the pet safe for you and your companions?

Pets have different levels of aggression and you must be sure that you and the people you live with can cope with the behavioral tendencies of the pet. Some exotic pets might also be poisonous or are prone to certain infectious diseases, and thus you have to make sure that you and your companions can avoid any untoward incidents.

Having exotic pets is a serious matter and you should examine everything before deciding to own one.

Some pets are stolen. A pet thief may snatch Fifi or Fido in hopes of getting a reward for its return, or to use in dog fights (even small or gentle dogs are susceptible – they can be used as “bait”), or for use in cult rituals.

What kind of pets did people have during the American Revolution?

Just a curious question. A friend and I were discussing this and we found it would just be a neat thing to know. Did they even have pets? I’ve heard dogs were popular, but what kind? I’ve heard a lot of different answers, and research is too much of a pain for a ‘just to know’ question.

I don’t think they tended to keep pets (not the way we think of them), though they would have had working animals, including dogs to guard and manage livestock, horses for transportation, oxen for pulling heavy loads, and cats for pest control. I’m sure there were a few people who had a particular fondness for an animal, but I doubt it was the norm. It would have been an extravagance.

How can pet owners tell if their pets, cats or dogs are happy?

I seem to think that my cats are bored because they sleep too much!
They seem sad, not very playful and they are only 1 year old.
What are some signs of happy pets or unhappy pets?

Cats are supposed to sleep an average of 18 hours a day… that is perfectly normal… as long as they eat sleep and poop normally… you have a happy cat… some cats are just not that playful while others are bouncing off the wall… chill… they are cats doing what cats do best lol

What happens when your flying a pet interstate and it has a stopover? Where do they keep the pets?

I have a puppy from Adelaide being flown up to the pilbara today. He has a stopover in Perth for 30-35 minutes. What will happen to him there? Do they store the pets in air-conditioning, are they fed? Looked over to make sure they are ok? Are they given water?

For a 35 minute stopover he would stay in the freight hanger
If he missed his connection then the airline would be required (we hope!) to send him to a kennel

What do your pets do when you get in the bed?

I have 3 cats and the youngest always comes running from wherever he is at in the house when he hears me turn on the fan and jumps right in the bed with me. It’s sooo cute. The others will eventually come and run across my head while I’m sleeping or wake me up in the morning, but my youngest definitely has them beat in this category with his antics.
What cute or annoying things do your pets do when you are in the bed?

My 2 cats each sleep on either side of me in bed. The dogs would like to also but the cats won’t let them.

My cat George is very dysfunctional since he was taken from his mom at 4 weeks. (He’s now 7 years old). He kneads bread on me and puts his head on my shoulder and in the morning, gently taps my face until I wake up to give him his breakfast. He’s better than any alarm clock I’ve had. Trouble is, he wants his breakfast at 5AM!!

How do you keep unwanted neighborhood pets out of your yard in a safe way?

We just moved into a beautiful home and unfortunately our neighbor has about a half dozen cats and they seem to like our front yard as a litter box. (yuck!) We have three small children and no pets so having to pick up after someone elses pets is not cool at all. Plus it’s unsanitary! What can use that is eco-friendly and safe. Thank you and all answers are welcomed!

Well, let’s see. A yard is tricky since it’s such a large area. I normally sprinkle raw, fresh pepper over the areas I don’t want any of my four cats (all indoor babies) getting into. They really don’t appreciate the sneezing attacks that ensue.

I don’t approve of all the options listed in this site, but it has some good suggestions that are eco-friendly.
