Nexgen required a solution that could give them the controls and effective technology in combination with comprehensive functionality for their complex manufacturing requirements.

Nexgen Technologies is an emerging leader in the manufacture of unique capital equipment designed for the semiconductor industry. Based in Santa Clara, CA Nexgen, leverages outsourcing of major components allowing their organization to focus on engineering, product development and testing.

As a highly engineering focused manufacturer serving this dynamic industry their Business model is simple, to be the best at delivering one of a kind capital equipment. Designing and building to customer specification is a major differentiator and the word has spread quickly much to the satisfaction of the entrepreneurial oriented Nexgen organization. Next step in continuing the success is optimizing the challenging parts of the business.

For Nexgen, operating at peak efficiency was critical for continued growth and profitability at the levels the business plan called for. According to Steve Naylor, Director of IT at Nexgen,”the challenges to growth meant we needed an integrated business system in place that add controls and facilitate the numerous challenges presented in an Engineer to Order business like ours. Critical areas we needed to improve upon included; speed and accuracy of quoting, managing actual costs, reducing cycle times between design and manufacturing, managing bom revisions and project costs, begin billing for projects based on progress, streamline our business procedures and eliminate wasted approval and notification bottlenecks.”

Nexgen Technologies current ERP system, a product first released in 1991, lacks several key areas that have now become critical to their business such as, multi-site, progress billing, workflow for process improvement and many other shortcomings that were limiting this complex Engineer to Order (ETO) manufacturer. As a result, Nexgen has been forced to be encumbered with system obstacles that slowed their responsiveness, hindered their visibility to project costs, and consumed unnecessary cycles due to lack of workflow creating ineffective sneaker net communications. This was costing the company in many aspects of the business.

After many months of evaluation of ERP systems Nexgen selected VISIBILITY.net ERP. According to Steve Naylor, Director of IT at Nexgen, “this ERP solution is exactly what we were looking for and is oriented on our type of one-of-a-kind manufacturing business. They understand our business demands and have 20 plus years of experience implementing their solution effectively. What we liked most was the comprehensiveness of the software and how it will enable us to optimize all areas of our business. From quotes, to costing, financial compliance, projects, business process improvements through workflow and will accommodate our growth with multi-entity and multi-lingual. Additionally, it was designed from the onset using Microsoft’s .net which gives us a contemporary business platform to grow our business on. “

With the recent advent of .NET technology, the problems encountered by Nexgen’s previous system limitations are erased with the VISIBILITY.net ERP solution. It is 100% written in .NET-managed code, VISIBILITY.net, has been developed from the ground up to support multi-site ETO/MTO manufacturers.

In summary, the VISIBILITY.net ERP solution reduces hardware and maintenance costs for one-of-a-kind (ETO/MTO) manufacturers. With only a single database to manage, the inherent complexities of maintaining separate databases are eliminated, thereby increasing the accuracy of tracking costs.

Visibility Corporation (www.visibility.com) is a leading developer and supplier of business software solutions designed for the unique needs of project-based, engineer-to-order and to-order manufacturers. Visibility’s Enterprise Application solutions help midsize manufacturers of complex products operate their businesses effectively. Visibility has an extensive customer base throughout North America and Europe and has the strongest representation of ERP among complex manufacturers.

VISIBILITY.net is an integrated ERP solution and more. Offering unparalleled functionality and integrated workflow, this browser-based solution cost effectively delivers the power of .NET-based Web services for use with either a Microsoft SQL Server™ or Oracle® database. Conducting business any place, any time, any where is a reality, deployable with unprecedented flexibility.

Success in Internet Marketing can be extremely hard to come into, but there is an easy way with really no cash involved and it is by finding a niche and building a eccommere storefront around it.

Nowadays, everybody considers 3D as a quite standard thing – we have tons of that kind of media around us, such as 3D computer games, 3D movies and so on. This virtual environment is getting deeper in our lives and to be honest, people like it. For many, it’s like being a part of the future, like touching something that we could have only read about in Science fiction books some 30 years ago.

Sometimes we do not really understand that 3D is already something that we expect, not only consume as a product in the Movies and pay attention to in TV ads. Speaking in terms of the usual business based on goods production, sometimes we wish there was a 3D model or animation of some product before we buy it.

A major part of all sales is done online these days, using the ever growing sales channel – the Internet. You can find nearly everything on E-bay or Amazon, if not – there must be something you are looking for in the Internet itself, with all its billions of web pages and millions of online businesses. And when speaking about some unique product that needs more info for the buyer to make a decision – a higher level of the product visualization is required.

Here we go – Real Estate business sector, with thousands of agencies and millions of properties. And thousands of buyers too! I was one of them recently.

Having browsed a number of local real state agencies’ web sites and their offers, I was a bit concerned about the size of the information presented – merely enough to give a brief description. A couple of low resolution photos, usually giving no solid picture of the interior, sometimes a graphical 2D floor plan – and that’s it.

My mind was demanding something more visual, a video from inside the house for example. But, everyone knows that videos are big files and internet is not a cable television and I understood that technically it would be rather naive to expect it there. Eventually, I found a link that brought me to what was called a “3D House Walkthrough” – a computer graphic animation that literally let me walk through the house, around the house and even the back yard.

Now that was a nice discovery. Something that I thought I would never find appeared to be there – well, I never doubted that if there is will there is … an Internet. My further research on such functionality for Real Estate web sites was not very promising, as I could not find anything else of that kind. To my understanding, the majority of agencies either underestimate the power of 3D or just are not aware of such services at all.

www.House-Walk.com was the 3D house flythrough video developer, and I say Thank You, it was nice walking that virtual house without a need to drive miles to it.

To my belief, this kind of 3D presentation is highly demanded and will soon be a wide spread feature on every Real Estate web site.

Two solar power technologies exist, the passive and the active technology. The passive technology are the photocell panels or the photovoltaic film that receives sunlight and generates electricity more apt for a space station or a home. The active technology is a solar thermal that uses a dish to concentrate sunlight that produces steam, which in turn powers a turbine that generates electricity. Another active technology, which is not being promoted, hidden form public view, is using the Stirling Engine to move a power generator.

The passive technology is ready to go, and there are a few homes that have already installed the system. This system is totally clean, backed by the USDOE Solar American Initiative, it requires sufficient space on the roof to position the panels or film, and uses an inverter to turn direct current into alternate current homes can use. The Utility companies have also developed the Net Metering system to buy electricity on their terms, from homes that have generate a surplus of electricity. The new federal tax law “Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008″ effective January 2009 provides a 30% tax credit of the cost of a solar system. Some States are also providing large incentives to install solar systems, although with the current economic crisis these paybacks can be curtailed or delayed. The rest of the payback has to come from real savings generated over time by the system from the Utility company. This passive solar system is expensive as of today, and payback is obtained in 8 years of savings. Photovoltaic film or photocell panels are low efficiency and voltage, and compare badly with the option of buying electricity from the utility company. Currently you require from 13 to 15 photocell panels to generate the 2.5 to 3.0 Kilowatt hours generating capacity.

Walmart has established a pilot plan to install photovoltaic panels in several of their stores. If the system produces a return, they will massively implement it in all their stores, since they have sufficient roof space currently not utilized.

The Solar-thermal system is not adequate for homes and mainly will be used for large Utility companies. However, the active system based on a Stirling engine to power a generator which could be applicable for homes, is not available for massive distribution. Although all of its components have been developed, no one has yet integrated the solar power generating kit, or a home appliance. This home system or appliance should be very low cost because it requires: a solar collector or dish which could cost around $200 USD, a stiriling engine with a cost of $350, the 3 KW per hour power generator with a cost of $350, and the battery bank which is the expensive ticket item and could run several thousand dollars, to store electricity if the system is a stand alone not tied to the power grid. If the home is currently supplied by a utility company, then the battery bank is not needed and the Net Metering system with the public utility company can be used. In addition to the sun collector dish the rest of the system can be packaged in two boxes. One which has the stiriling engine and power generator, and the other with the battery if you are a location not tied to the grid. It can also have a gas heater installation as a backup to when there is a lack of sunlight making this a very reliable alternative.

Apparently, there are companies in America, New Zealand, India, Sweden, and other countries trying to develop the stiriling engine . A few companies are receiving funding from investment funds to develop the stiriling engine for this home appliance. Infinia Corporation, a US company has a head start, because they are currently producing a big sterling engine to power up 10 homes at a time and installing many of them in a centralized solar farm in California. Other companies should not be discouraged because markets are so huge, there will be enough room for all suppliers. Just in United States alone there is a potential of 124 million Homes that could use the solar power appliance, plus commercial and industrial sites.

Having the home powering appliance, can be the initial steps for returning to sustainable systems. Today, the sun is light and warmth, provided to us from God and Nature, free for all of us to use and enjoy. A home solar powered generator would provide clean energy, and allow equal footing to all nations rich and poor, to devote their funding into other worthwhile social services such as Health and Education. Rich nations which have electrical grids and power generation capacity would suddenly feel there would be no need to continue increasing Power generation capacities and hopefully they would discontinue all those plants that contaminate.

In the old days, the 90’s, raster technology – the use of a single layer as a solution for all visible publishing tasks – was king. Those days are long gone and vector technology rules now. Vector solutions comprise layers of data, and this is the way all modern graphics, web pages, CAD applications, marine charts, printing jobs and much else is done.

Understanding the difference between vector and raster Technologies is vital for both graphics and web page code.

Raster graphics
To explain: raster graphics are single-layer files that comprise a 2D description of the data. Two dimensional files – up / down and left / right – are a ‘flat’ technology that has no depth, and has x-axis and y-axis data only. Three-dimensional technology, or 3D, is a more complete solution that includes depth, ie a z-axis as well. This approach can be applied to more or less anything visible, and is of interest to us for graphics and web page code in particular.

Starting with gfx (graphics): in the 90’s it was only possible for mainstream applications to use two dimensions. 3D applications were expensive and unusual. Therefore at that time, and then into the early 2000’s, it was accepted that 2D information was as good as it gets, for practical purposes. That all changed around 2002 and and these raster solutions became obsolete. Or more correctly, were overtaken by the availability of vector solutions in the mainstream markets.

In gfx today for example, Photoshop files are seen as a basic solution and not acceptable for full commercial use. This is because they are just simple 2D raster files. They cannot be scaled, so they are no use for full commercial use such as variable size print jobs. Such files cannot be used except at the size they are supplied, as they cannot scale. As a practical example, if you want to use your logo in a large-scale print job, or on the side of an advertising blimp, you can’t. If it were scaled up it would just look like a bad jpeg.

You will need a vector graphics file, which can be scaled to any size. An example is an Abobe Illustrator .ai file, which is therefore a level above Photoshop. This may conflict with the popular opinion of Photoshop being the ultimate gfx app – but unfortunately the truth is it’s just a basic tool now, professional work often demands a much better application.

Raster-based web page code
The same thing applies to web page code, whether on hand-coded sites or on database-driven CMS websites. The old, 90’s method was, if you like, a ‘raster’ approach: everything was on a single layer. This is a crude and obsolete way to code pages now. Its use is typified by tables and cells for the layout framework.

Around 2002 this method became outdated and layer-based page code took over. This vectorised approach uses layers (divs) and CSS to build the page structure. Having a third axis means that the page code is an order of magnitude better, and there are huge advantages. Just as you cannot use crude raster gfx for many print jobs, crude raster-based 2D pagecode is long outdated for the modern Internet.

Vector-based web pages have big advantages in accessibility and SEO for example. Just in SEO, these layer-based pages are so far in advance of flat pages (those using tables) that a site using them has massive advantages. And as in the situation where Photoshop is erroneously seen by the popular media as the top gfx application, in web page authoring many see Dreamweaver as the ultimate tool. However, web authoring applications such as SiteSpinner were using layer-based pages exclusively, years before Dreamweaver had ever heard of such a thing.

Joomla’s handicap
This is why Joomla CMS is now handicapped, as it is still struggling with old 90’s technology here. By 2002 table-based layouts were obsolete. By 2004, div-and-table temporary compromises such as the one Joomla uses were finished. The page code layout it uses became obsolete ages ago, and so changes are long overdue. This is the single most vital change that needs to be made to Joomla, and beside this all other requirements seem much less relevant.

It’s true that skilled developers can mitigate this to some extent, by clever template coding. However, the effects of tables in the code can never be entirely eliminated and it’s time they went. Even a remnant of this method left in a corner somewhere wrecks the project, as progress is effectively halted. Once tables have gone completely then the Joomla project will move forward faster and more efficiently.

Joomla 1.5 has comprehensive overrides available to template coders. Using these mean that a tableless layout can be implemented via the template, and an example is the Beez template. However this approach tends to result in a very simple and lightweight template, as too much is having to be done by the template coder. It’s not a bad thing for SEO, of course, if a template is lightweight – but what if you need a full-feature one with 30 collapsible module positions and 10 built-in colour variations?

Almost anything can be plugged in or overridden in Joomla. This is part of the tradition, and one of the many reasons it is such a powerful machine. But there is a limit – at what point do you draw the line and say enough is enough? In theory, taking this to extremes, it wouldn’t matter what the core did as long as you could plug something in.

There are two areas where it is reasonable to state that core functionality cannot be successfully augmented or overridden, and those are ACL and code layout. ACL needs to be a core function because plugin solutions cannot be said to be 100% successful. Correct code layout needs to be a core function because, again, plugin solutions can only go partway toward fixing the problem.

Imagine what would be possible if Joomla had a core tableless code layout scheme. You’d be able to get templates that had, in addition to the usual features, built-in source ordering controls. Now that’s what I’d call progress. You might not see that as significant but in terms of SEO and accessibility (best seen as the same thing in any case), that’s a massive leap forward.

It’s correct to say that a developer can do almost anything with Joomla – but that isn’t really the point of the project in many peoples’ view. What is the point is what the users can do with it – the webmasters who have to work with it. If functions are available to the average webmaster then the application succeeds; if they are not, and are only there for developers, then you have an entirely different beast. That wouldn’t be Joomla and it wouldn’t be as successful.

Why the Joomla 1.5 series was introduced without fixing the code layout issue is hard to understand, since in many ways J1.5 is incompatible with the older version and therefore a major rewrite took place. How the basic foundation changes that are needed were excluded is a bit of a mystery – but that’s open-source for you. Roll on Joomla 2.0! Luckily, Joomla is such an incredible multimedia publishing tool that it compares well with the best of them. However, the future looks ominous unless radical changes are made, as it’s hard to support steam age technology in the modern world.
