How much of my travel expenses can I legally deduct from my USA income tax? Opinions? Experiences?

If the principal purpose of your Travel is for Business then you can deduct those costs, but you must prorate them between the business and personal purposes.

If the principal purpose is personal then you can only deduct the portions of lodging and meals (at 50% on the meals) that are directly attributable to the business purpose. No travel and transportation is deductible.

If the IRS determines that this is more of a hobby than a true business they will further limit any deductions that are allowable to the income you generated from selling the pictures. In this case the income goes on line 21 of Form 1040 and the allowable expenses go on Schedule A as a Miscellaneous Deduction.

Has anyone ever been a travel agent or known a travel agent that made alot of money or that owned any kind of travel business and was successful? I would like to know what kind of license I need in order to be a legitimate travel agent. I am based in New York. Is there are school I need to go to or training online. I am a travel agent with YTB. The company provided me with a website that people can go on to and book there travel. They also provide all the training and support I need to be a successful travel agent. It is really a great program and I’ve already booked travel for some friends of mine and seen the commission. I’m considering doing ground Travel to a place not too far away from here. Air travel is too expensive (especially since my trip won’t be too far into the future) so I’m considering going by train or even by bus (train is preferred.)

How do I go about searching for travel fare? I’m hoping there is a site similar to Priceline or Travelocity that deals with ground travel of this sort.

DETAILS: I’m hoping to travel a round-trip vacation between Portland, Oregon and Calgary, Alberta (Canada, of course). I’ll be travelling sometime this month.

Once again, I’m looking for help with finding places to get trainfare (or anything with ground travel) be it a Priceline-similar site or anything. I just need a way to find and compare prices for travelfare. Any hints, ideas, suggestions? Any help is much appreciated!

If you are planning to drive abroad in the school holidays you need to check exactly what type of car insurance cover you have.

A lady in London was shocked by how much she had to pay out for two minor accidents, even when she had bought insurance for her hire car. The two small scrapes, breaking a headlight and bumping the left wing of her car against a second rental car when parking, would probably have cost her little more than £100 each. Instead, she ended up paying out £1,237 in excess penalties.

When you rent a car in the UK or on abroad, the price includes fully comprehensive insurance but many people are not aware of the inflated excess charges which can be as high as £1,000 on the continent. Online provider, insurance4carehire, confirms this saying almost four out of 10 holidaymakers don’t know that they could be liable for these costs.

One way to get the cover you require without is to pays around £69 for an annual standalone policy, available from companies like insurance4carhire which covers all eventualities (including damage to underbody, tyres and windows, which are usually excluded in excess-waiver policies from car hire companies).

Every year three million British drivers set off to the continent, yet the price comparison website uSwitch says that two thirds aren’t sure if their insurance covers them or not. Apparently, ten per cent of Britons embark upon a driving holiday with the somewhat cloudy and incorrect notion that driving accidents are covered by our Travel insurance. Remember to read the small print, whether you are hiring a car or driving your own.

Mistake number one, if you are driving your own car, is to assume that your own fully comprehensive insurance necessarily provides the same level of cover when you are not in the UK. It does not. EU law only states that insurers are obliged to provide the bare minimum – which means third-party cover. This, of course, will not protect against accidental damage, theft or accident claims and only pays out for damage sustained to another person or car.

Ashton Berkhauer, an insurance expert at uSwitch, reckons that very few of the main providers offer free cover more than three days. The exceptions are eCar and Saga, which both provide driving cover abroad for 365 days a year. Barclays it will charge you £21.50 for up to 90 days’ cover, and with Admiral it will cost you £9 for four days and £17 for up to 30.

Paul Baxter of Tescocompare.com recommends that drivers should also make sure they have adequate breakdown cover. Breakdown cover in the UK can cost as little as £30 a year, and the cheapest Europe-wide policy is £69, this covers an annual trip of up to 31 days in Europe (IC Breakdown relating to a 30-year old man driving a Ford Focus with an annual mileage of 12,000).

However, Peter Gerrard of price comparison site Money-supermarket.com points out that some of the less expensive policies (not including IC Breakdown) are fairly stripped-down and you have to pay when the breakdown occurs, then claim the cost back on your return. Single-trip policies can also be bought for about £42 from the RAC, AA and Europ Assistance.

How many Travel days it take astronauts to travel from Earth to the moon?

About 3 days between leaving an orbit around Earth and settling into an orbit around the moon.

After launch on Saturn V SA-504 on July 16, 1969 from pad 39A of Kennedy Space Center, Apollo 11 entered Earth orbit. After 1 1/2 Earth orbits, the S-IVB stage was re-ignited at 16:16:16 UT for a translunar injection burn of 5 minutes, 48 seconds putting the spacecraft on course for the moon. The CSM separated from the S-IVB stage containing the LM33 minutes later, turned around and docked with the LM at 16:56:03 UT. About an hour and 15 minutes later the S-IVB stage was injected into heliocentric orbit. During translunar coast a color TV transmission was made from Apollo 11 and on July 17 a 3-second mid-course correction burn of the main engine was performed. Lunar orbit insertion was achieved on July 19 at 17:21:50 UT by a retrograde firing of the main engine for 357.5 seconds while the spacecraft was behind the moon and out of contact with Earth. A later 17 second burn circularized the orbit. On July 20 Armstrong and Aldrin entered the LM for final checkout. At 18:11:53 the LM and CSM separated. After a visual inspection by Collins, the LM descent engine fired for 30 seconds at 19:08 UT, putting the craft into a descent orbit with a closest approach 14.5 km above the moon’s surface. At 20:05 the LM descent engine fired for 756.3 seconds and descent to the lunar surface began

As we all know, Traveling is a fun past time. You may visit places that you will get to see only once in your life. Why not capture the memory on photographs? For photo enthusiasts, getting the images is just as important as the idea of reaching a destination.

Some tips on how you can get better travel images

1. Carry the right gear
If you are looking to buy new gear before your next travel plan, you will need to make a basic choice between a compact camera and a Single Lens Reflex variety. It is unfair to say one is better than the other. It is a matter of how skilled you are to use the SLR, since it is a complex machine. When you use the SLR variety, you do have the added advantage of interchangeable lenses and zillions of gadgets to go with it. You could choose to buy ultra wide lenses for interiors and long focal length tele lenses for wild life images. On the other hand, these cameras are heavy to hold, difficult to master and more expensive. A compact will probably have a good range zoom inbuilt and will be much easier to use if Photography is not something you wish to take the time to learn.

2. The right film
If you are among those who still prefer film over digital, that is fine – many people do. Well, you need to choose film as per the call of the hour. Generally speaking you will want fast film, or film with a high ISO rating like 400 or 800, if you are shooting in low light or with long lenses. If the light is adequate you will want slower film, such as 100 or 200 – they provide better quality. Make sure you carry enough film and batteries not to be left without any means to shoot at an awkward time. Keep exposed film in a separate bag or compartment so it doesn’t get mixed up with new batches of film.

3. Get adequate information about where you are headed
As mentioned in the previous paragraph, you will need to plan ahead for the trip. Some situations of extremely cold or hot climate may require special clothing for you and protection for your camera. Use an underwater camera housing even if you just plan to shoot on the beach. The sand and spray can ruin a camera and its lens, especially where modern lenses with minute motors built in are concerned.

4. Maintain a journal
Do not ever leave your viewers left wondering what an image means. Every picture should be a story in itself. Note the data, time, place and exposure of the images where possible, so you can relate incidents as you show your images to family and friends.

You can also turn to the Internet in your search for information.  There are plenty of travel sites where the public is free to post their travel stories, and you’ll have no trouble finding their complaints and compliments regarding different air carriers.  You can also check travel and consumer review magazines for their airline ratings.  They are great places to get unbiased opinions on the pluses and minuses of Traveling with different airlines.

Review consumer reporting agencies for complaints if you have doubts about a specific airline.  Simply run a Google search with the keyword complaint and the name of the airline and you’ll find links to whatever is out there.

There’s no reason why you should grab a ticket on the first airline you find which has service to your destination.  You’ve put lots of thought into your trip, and you deserve to put the same among of thought into the sort of experience you’ll have on the flight which gets you where you’re going and returns you Home again!

I am planning of going to Spain, and would like to know if I could travel to spain with my swiss resident permit and my other passport (as I can travel to france with my swiss resident permit)? And the guys Traveling with me has a shengen visa, is that okay?

Yes, the Swiss type C residence permit waives the visa requirement to the other Schengen countries; same applies to a visa issued by Switzerland if it is a type C visa and it states valid for "Schengen States" in the first column.

I am Travelling to Syndey this weeked for a holiday from Brisbane. Should I get travel insurance? I have private health insurance. I don’t think it is necessary. I have had travel insurance before but this was for overseas travel.

One major thing that your Health insurance won’t cover though is problems with the airline/flight. For example, one trip from Melbourne – Gold Coast couldn’t take off because of flooding on the Gold Coast. All that the airline could offer was a flight 2 days later or a credit. My travel insurance picked up the difference (about $350 extra) to change to a different airline and fly into Brisbane later that day.

Other things to consider, if you get sick while you’re away or even before you are due to go and you can’t fly on the day you have booked, if you don’t give 24 hours notice you won’t be able to change your date on discounted tickets and you then have to forfeit your ticket and buy a new one for when you are well enough. Travel insurance would cover this.

Mind you, there are many people out there who don’t take insurance for domestic trips, I guess it comes down to whether you have to money to cover it if something goes wrong….
