Each year millions of family pets are lost, and end up at shelters that have no idea who these pets belong to, or how to contact the owners to return the pets. But, something as simple as a pet tag that you only have to register for once, because the contact information can be updated free for the life of the pet, can almost erase this problem and reunite many pets with their families.
Questions to Ask Before for Buying Exotic Pets
Having a pet has always been found by many to be a life enriching experience. It isn’t unusual for people to have a dog or a cat as companions at Home. However, there are people who aren’t content with the typical animal friends, others want the excitement and thrill that can be provided by exotic pets. Acquiring and maintaining exotic pets are not really that difficult nowadays, but if you are considering to get an exotic pet, you must first ask yourself the following questions:
Why do you want an exotic pet?
Many people consider having exotic pets because it seems to be cool to have one. However, having exotic pets is a serious decision that one must carefully examine. Many exotic pets need more care than typical pets. You should weigh all factors according to your abilities and capacities before getting any particular exotic pet.
Is it legal to keep the exotic pet?
Some animals are prohibited by law to be kept as pets. You should make sure that your area allows people to own the particular species you are eyeing before getting it. Otherwise you might have to give up your pet or be penalized for owning it. What are exotic pets like?
Do you have the capacity and ability to own the exotic pet?
Keep in mind that some pets, like a dog for example, are much more expensive to own than others. It is important that you know what you and your family can do to keep your pet Healthy, happy and safe before you make any purchases.
As mentioned, most exotic pets need extra care and attention. You must be sure that you have the time, effort and money to spend caring for the exotic pet. Can you feed it? Can you provide appropriate shelter? Can you afford the health care expenses? Owning pets, especially exotic ones, takes great responsibility, and you must be certain that you have this quality before owning one.
Can the pet live in your area?
Certain pets may be legal in your area, but they may not necessarily be able to live in your home. Some pets might be too noisy or too rowdy to live in apartments and condominiums. Pets usually require a certain amount of space, air, and sunlight to live well and you have to be sure that your home can provide that.
Is the pet safe for you and your companions?
Pets have different levels of aggression and you must be sure that you and the people you live with can cope with the behavioral tendencies of the pet. Some exotic pets might also be poisonous or are prone to certain infectious diseases, and thus you have to make sure that you and your companions can avoid any untoward incidents.
Having exotic pets is a serious matter and you should examine everything before deciding to own one.
Some pets are stolen. A pet thief may snatch Fifi or Fido in hopes of getting a reward for its return, or to use in dog fights (even small or gentle dogs are susceptible – they can be used as “bait”), or for use in cult rituals.

Why are people so snotty about exotic pets?
Every time I go into a pet shop I see hamsters rubbing their noses raw on their little tanks, or chewing the bars manically, trying to get out. I see bunny rabbits lying looking so bored they could just die. I see the little prisons of goldfish bowls or hamster cages people keep their pets in…how is this better than someone keeping an unusual pet to the best of their ability? Its always people who know nothing about exotics who go on about how cruel it is, and that people who keep exotic pets don’t know what they are doing. I often spend years researching before I buy new pets, and yes, I am convinced my exotic pets are just as happy as my "common" ones, because I go out of my way to make sure they are. Yes you get idiots keeping monkeys in their living room and letting their burmese pythons roam in their garden and kill the neighbours cats, but we’re not all like that! My pet sugar gliders are tamer than one of my "regular" pets who was abused by her previous owner, if these are wild animals who hate living in my home how come they spend hours every day happily snoozing on my neck, playing games with me in the same way as a kitten might, and generally interacting with me in a way I bet the rabbits that tonnes of people have shoved in damp, dusty old hutches in their gardens never get the chance to do with their owners?
Anyway, I’m really interested to hear peoples opinions on exotic pets, so please do share!
RockstarMonday, I see your point, but many people DO still feel that we should not be keeping hedgehogs and sugar gliders. Ferrets dont count because they are a domestic species, same as cats and dogs. I happen to agree that most people are not capable of taking care of primates or large constrictors, I do however know private owners who have both (along with kinkajou, raccoons and coatimundi) who give them excellent care and everything they need. Apes, big cats, wild dogs and venemous snakes are a whole ‘nother ball game but there are STILL people out there capable of caring for them. Sadly, people just get jumped on before people know anything about the situation.

I’m just snotty about bad pet owners in general.
As long as people care for their pets and love them then i don’t care if they have a snake or a kitten.

I think the snotty options on owing exotic pats come from two different camps. the first one is people who dont have the knowledge to understand what a great pet some exotic pets make. its way outside of their comfort ability box.For what ever reason maybe they live in a community where there have been irresponsible owners and it has had a negative impact on their view, or they are scared it could have a negative impact. The other i think is from exotic owners. Owning an exotic is a status symbol for alot of people.Even if its a less expensive exotic like a glider,or a hedgehog,or a ferret will play up the negatives to make people feel that you have to be a superior person to own and keep this animal, and unless you can handle this this or that then your not good enough thus making themselves feel superior.I also think the media has alot to do with peoples option on exotic owners. all most people ever see are the negative. you see puppy mills on the news, you see parrots living in nasty cages being removed form homes. people never get to see the well care for animals that are loving pets
