Natural calamities,God,Superstitions and Science:
There are many natural calamities like Earthquakes,Volcanoes,Tsunami,Cyclones,Super cyclones,Landslides,Thunderstorms,etc.The tsunami,which is defined as an earthquake in ocean,killed many people from different countries irrespective of geographical boundaries,religious differences,sex differences,age variations,and irrespective of many such variations.Is God angry with the children who were enjoying on the marina beach in Chennai or elsewhere on that day? but God forgives/protects even the greatest sinners, according to mythological texts.
There were many reports of earthquakes killing people from different parts of the world.Similarly a super cyclone in Orissa killed many people a few years back.
When natural calamities occur, many people blame fate/God due to ignorance.But at the same time Science could not predict Earthquakes,Tsunamis,etc.It can only explain natural calamities.For example Plate Tectonics theory says Earthquakes occur at the plate boundaries.According to this theory,the earth is divided into 7 major plates and many minor plates.These plates move at a rate of 1cm/year.These movements cause Earthquakes,Volacanoes,etc.Thus Science explains many natural calamities and some can even be pridicted by using science,for example the prediction of Cyclones,Landslides,etc.Science even advocates us the precautions to be taken.
If a student wants to succeed in an examination,he/she should work hard,i.e.,prepare the examination in a planned/scientific way instead of leaving everything to God( some students pray to God for a pass in the examination), or being superstitious by under estimating himself/herself.
Some students if they fail blame God,what is in God’s hands? when we ourselves are ignorant of how to tackle the examination.Superstition is a sign of ignorance.
when we met with an accident due to careless driving by us or by the opponent,we suddenly blame fate/god/stars,instead of analysing the situation.Medical Science cures many of injuries,diseases, than God or any other superstitions.Some scientists even opined that Astrology is a superstition.
Recently a fly over collapsed in New Delhi, and 2 people lost thier lives.Some people blamed God/fate,some blamed the government for its corrupt practices in constructing the fly over.If the government had taken all the precautions,2 lives would have saved.
In ancient days,due to fear and due to lack of awareness,people developed many superstitions including the idol worship, and many other rituals.Religion is just a matter of faith.Now a days, the people are so much westernised and also got a lot of awareness about life and methods to solve their day to day problems due to the developments in technology.The Infromation technology,Bio technology are doing wonders in the lives of people. For eg:Internet,search engines,etc are helping people to communicate fastest and also to acquire knowledge.The first man on the earth was provided with the natural resources only,not even Education/awareness.Gradually the man started thinking to simplify his day to day activities.Thus by using better inputs now,we could increase the output in agriculture.Thus civilisation progressed from Stone age to the present IT age due to the efforts of man,i.e.scientific research.The developments in Science and Technology can even predict the sex of a to be born child,and thus science and technology do many wonders.We have grown to the extent of sending Chandrayaan-1,which will send us Geological and geographical information of the moon.Shortly we are also sending an unmanned mission to the moon.
In the rural areas, farmers blame God/fate whenever they face problems with agriculture.For eg:if the crops fail they blame themselves(they assume they are unfortunate),god,fate.But the reality is many farmers do not get assistance/support/guidance from the government regarding the ‘methods’ to be adopted for a better output.Some farmers are eager to get more out put and may not follow the scientific metods of agriculture.
In south India,many people follow Rahukaalam and yamagandam.If these have any significance,what is happening to the flights/trains/buses start travelling during such inauspicious time?.
